What is a "Cañones"??

PDF
PDF

It's a really unique place

Cañones is a hidden valley in Northern New Mexico. It sits in the shadow of [click for photo] Pedernal [click for photo] Pedernal (more art), and thus has it's own little microclimate. There is an active local population, generations of which have lived in this valley for hundreds of years. They are decended from the original indigenous Indian population and the early Spanish settlers.

Several important and huge ruins exist nearby

Stone working flakes and pottery shards abound all over the area.

Water is one of the things that make this area special - there are numerous springs that feed two local creeks, Polvadera Creek which runs through our land before joining with Cañones Creek. Nearby Abique reservoir is the destination.

Tradition and Conflict

The [click for photo] Rio Grande SUN scoop ran a series about change in local communities. Here's the one on Cañones.
